April is too hot in Guanacaste cause it hasn’t been raining for almost 5 months but the Miravalles Volcano area is dry and cool. Through the windows of our car we could notice the air temperature changing.

Paraiso Camping Lodge

We arrived to Paraiso Camping Lodge at 11 am. Jorge and Magda, the owners were waiting for us. They showed us around and willingly informed us of all the activities we could do in the nearby area. We left our things and ordered two fresh natural fruit smoothies.

There are 6 cabinas spread around the back garden, each with a nice big bathroom and a small porch. Then, there is a small restaurant area for breakfast, lunch, coffee and chilling. All the little houses face the Miravalles Volcano. The gardens are very well taken care of, so if you have a small kid like ours, he can run all over the place. Breakfast is included and is really great: fresh fruit for starters, followed by a choice between continental or traditional plate. Both are simply delicious.

Las Hornillas Volcano Hot Springs

On the first day we went to Las Hornillas Volcano Hot springs. There, we covered our bodies with volcanic mud and enjoyed the natural sauna and hot and cold dip baths.  We recommend walking all around the marked path to see the bubbling springs and mud pools. You can also visit the waterfalls and hanging bridges.

Colina de Miravalles

The following day we went to the Colinas de Miravalles, a small, locally run lodge with onsite hot spring pools and five spacious cabins. In addition to its volcano views, the property itself is scenic, with tropical landscaping that attracts birds. The restaurant is very good and uses a lot of local ingredients (farm-raised chicken, cheese, and homemade jams).

Rio Perdido

During the afternoon we went to Rio Perdido . Located near the town of Fortuna, near Miravalles Volcano,  in a remote and seemingly untouched area, this high-end resort has 20 modern bungalows set in the thick forest. Guests can enjoy the 26 km (16 miles) of hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as the zip line for some adventure. There is also ample opportunity to just relax with a soak in the natural hot springs, a rejuvenating yoga session, or some pampering at the spa.
